African Coastal Cities & Climate Change (Desmond Majekodunmi) | Breakfast Central | News Central TV
Africa’s coastal cities facing climate change challenges are the major focus across the continent as the World Cities Day is being celebrated around the globe today. The World Cities Day 2019 has as its theme “Changing the world: innovations and a better life for future generations”.
It is a day set aside by the UN to promote the international community’s interest in global urbanization, push forward cooperation among countries in meeting opportunities and addressing challenges of urbanization.
The UN says that half of the world’s population are already living in cities with the number expected to double by 2050. It says that urbanization poses several sustainability challenges related to climate change, housing, environment, infrastructure, safety, and natural resources.
Africa’s coastal cities like Lagos, Abidjan, Lome, Cape Town and Dar es Salaam have witnessed flooding in recent years due to the challenges of increased urbanization and climate change.
